Find Hidden Electrical Problems Before They Become Larger, More Expensive, or Potentially Dangerous

Solar Wiring Repair and Safety Inspections

Solar panels are built to endure many years outdoors, but the wiring, connectors, electrical components, and mounting hardware can degrade as time passes. Heat, moisture, harsh weather, animals, installation errors, roof repairs, and normal aging may all lead to damage. Many systems still generate power even when service is needed, so problems often remain hidden without a professional inspection.

iSP Solar provides solar wiring and safety inspections for homes and businesses. We inspect eligible systems installed by iSP Solar and by other providers, including “orphaned” systems when the original contractor is no longer available.

If you’ve noticed exposed wiring, frequent shutdowns, signs of animals, reduced output, or unusual electrical smells—or if you’re unsure about the condition of an older system—our service team will inspect all accessible components, document any issues, and recommend the right repairs.

If your system isn’t operating at full potential, iSP Solar is who to call!

Solar Is an Electrical System—Safety Matters

A solar array produces direct current (DC) electricity when its panels receive sufficient sunlight. The system also uses equipment that converts DC into alternating current (AC) so the building can use it and, when applicable, send power to the utility grid. Components and wiring may be installed on the roof, beneath the panels, in the attic, along exterior walls, near the main electrical panel, and around the inverter or battery system.

Problems like loose connections, damaged insulation, unsecured wiring, water leaks, corrosion, rodent damage, or improper installation can lower energy production and increase the risk of electrical shock or fire. Since solar equipment can remain energized during daylight hours, only qualified professionals with photovoltaic and electrical expertise should inspect or repair it.

If you see sparks, smoke, melted parts, severe heat damage, or smell something burning, keep your distance and call emergency services if needed. Do not touch any wiring, open electrical panels, or try to fix the system yourself.

Signs Your Solar System May Need a Wiring or Safety Inspection

Schedule an evaluation if you notice:

  • Exposed, loose, hanging, cracked, or damaged solar wiring
  • Chewed wires, nesting material, droppings, or other signs of animal activity
  • Burn marks, melted plastic, discoloration, or an electrical odor
  • Water or moisture near an inverter, junction box, disconnect, or electrical panel
  • Corroded connectors, conduit, enclosures, or mounting hardware
  • A solar inverter that repeatedly shuts down or displays electrical fault codes
  • Breakers or disconnects that trip repeatedly
  • Missing panels or unexplained production losses in the monitoring app
  • A sudden increase in electric bills
  • Buzzing, popping, or other unusual sounds near solar equipment
  • Roof leaks or recent storm damage around the array
  • Wiring disturbed by roofing, siding, HVAC, tree, or construction work
  • An older solar system with an unknown inspection or maintenance history
  • A home purchase where the solar system’s installation records are incomplete
  • Concerns raised by an electrician, roofer, home inspector, utility, or insurance company

Some wiring problems are not visible from the ground. If system performance changes or monitoring reports repeated faults, further testing may be needed even when the panels appear normal.

What Is Included in a Solar Wiring and Safety Inspection?

The scope of work depends on the system’s design, accessibility, reported symptoms, site conditions, and the service you request. A qualifying inspection may include:

  • Review of system history, monitoring alerts, and reported concerns
  • Visual inspection of accessible solar panels and rooftop components
  • Evaluation of exposed and accessible DC wiring
  • Evaluation of accessible AC wiring serving the solar equipment
  • Inspection of accessible connectors, junction boxes, combiner boxes, and conduit
  • Review of wire support, routing, protection, and rooftop contact points
  • Inspection for animal damage, nesting, and chewed wiring
  • Observation for corrosion, moisture, overheating, or physical damage
  • Evaluation of accessible grounding and bonding components
  • Inspection of inverter, disconnect, breaker, and labeling conditions
  • Review of visible mounting and roof-interface concerns
  • Electrical testing when appropriate and included in the service scope
  • Monitoring and fault-code review
  • Photo documentation of identified concerns
  • Repair, replacement, or maintenance recommendations

An inspection covers only the components we can safely access and evaluate within the agreed scope. Hidden wiring, blocked or unreachable areas, utility-owned equipment, and issues concealed under roofing or other building materials may require additional work or coordination.

Solar Wiring Problems We Diagnose

Loose or Poor Electrical Connections

Connections can loosen, degrade, or perform poorly because of improper installation, thermal cycling, movement, corrosion, damaged components, or previous service work. A compromised connection may cause intermittent production, fault codes, overheating, or shutdowns.

Damaged Wire Insulation

Solar wiring may be damaged by abrasion, sharp roof surfaces, UV exposure, wind movement, tools, construction work, or contact with roofing materials. Damaged insulation can expose conductors to moisture and create an electrical hazard.

Animal and Rodent Damage

Squirrels, birds, and rodents may nest beneath solar panels or chew exposed wiring. Animal activity can damage conductors, connectors, module electronics, roof materials, and other components. Cleaning, repairs, and critter guard installation may all be needed depending on the condition.

Unsupported or Improperly Routed Wiring

Wires should not hang loosely, rest against abrasive surfaces, collect beneath panels, or remain exposed where they can be damaged. Proper support and routing help protect the wiring from movement, heat, moisture, and wear.

Corrosion and Moisture Intrusion

Water can enter damaged connectors, junction boxes, conduit, enclosures, or roof penetrations. Moisture and corrosion may cause communication problems, electrical faults, equipment damage, and unsafe conditions.

Connector and Compatibility Problems

Solar connectors that are damaged, improperly assembled, incompletely seated, or not appropriately matched can create resistance, overheating, and system faults. Compatible components and correct installation are important for reliable operation.

Grounding and Bonding Concerns

Grounding and bonding components help manage electrical faults and protect people and equipment. Missing, damaged, loose, or corroded components should be evaluated and corrected as appropriate for the system.

Inverter, Disconnect, and Breaker Concerns

An apparent wiring issue may originate in an inverter, disconnect, breaker, combiner, service panel, or another electrical component. Our evaluation considers the connected system rather than treating rooftop wiring in isolation.

Solar Wiring Repair and Corrective Service

If an inspection uncovers an issue, iSP Solar will explain your repair options and outline the corrective work needed. Depending on the findings, repairs may include:

  • Replacing damaged solar conductors or connectors
  • Correcting loose or failed electrical connections
  • Securing and rerouting unsupported wiring
  • Replacing damaged conduit, junction boxes, or enclosures
  • Repairing animal-damaged wiring and related components
  • Addressing corrosion or moisture-affected components
  • Replacing failed panel-level electronics
  • Repairing inverter or disconnect connections
  • Restoring grounding or bonding components
  • Updating required equipment labels where appropriate
  • Removing and reinstalling panels to reach damaged equipment
  • Installing critter guards after necessary cleaning and repairs
  • Recommissioning and testing the system after repairs

The best repair depends on the equipment on site, the severity of the damage, manufacturer requirements, current codes, the roof’s condition, and the system’s design. We don’t recommend covering damaged wiring with a critter guard or making cosmetic fixes. Have a qualified professional identify and fix the underlying electrical issue first.

Inspections After Storms, Roof Work, or Property Changes

Solar systems should be inspected if an event may have damaged the equipment or wiring. An inspection is recommended after:

  • High winds, hail, falling limbs, lightning, or severe weather
  • Roof leaks or roof replacement
  • Solar panel removal and reinstallation
  • Siding, gutter, chimney, HVAC, or electrical work near the array
  • Pest removal or nesting beneath the panels
  • Fire, flooding, or significant water intrusion
  • An inverter, battery, electrical panel, or utility-service upgrade
  • Purchase of a property with an unfamiliar solar installation

Even if the array looks intact from the ground, the wiring or connections under the panels may have shifted or been damaged.

Solar Safety Inspections for Homebuyers and Property Owners

A standard home inspection may flag obvious solar issues, but it typically won’t include a detailed review of photovoltaic wiring, inverter performance, system communications, production history, or panel-level equipment. If you’re buying a home with solar, a specialized inspection can give you a clearer picture of the system’s visible condition and how well it’s operating.

Helpful information may include:

  • System age and original installer
  • Equipment manufacturers and model numbers
  • Ownership, loan, lease, or power purchase agreement status
  • Available permits and electrical plans
  • Monitoring access and production history
  • Previous repair or removal-and-reinstallation records
  • Known roof leaks, animal activity, or system faults

iSP Solar can inspect eligible systems and identify visible or testable issues within the scope of service. However, a solar inspection does not guarantee future equipment performance and is not a replacement for legal, financial, title, roof, or contract reviews.

We Inspect Solar Systems Installed by Other Companies

You don’t have to be an original iSP Solar customer. We review eligible systems installed by national, regional, or local solar contractors—even if your original installer has closed or no longer provides service.

We help owners of:

  • Orphaned solar systems
  • Older systems with limited documentation
  • Systems with unresolved electrical faults
  • Homes purchased with existing solar
  • Systems damaged by animals, weather, or construction work
  • Arrays that were removed and reinstalled by another contractor
  • Systems that are producing but have visible safety concerns

If available, include photos, monitoring screenshots, equipment details, the original proposal, electrical plans, and past service records when you request an inspection.

Our Solar Wiring and Safety Inspection Process

1. Discuss the Concern

Tell us about any visible damage, error messages, changes in production, recent storms, animal activity, nearby construction, or why you’d like the system inspected.

2. Review the System

We identify the system architecture, inverter equipment, accessible wiring routes, electrical components, and any areas that need further evaluation.

3. Inspect and Test

Our team visually reviews accessible components and completes the testing included in the service scope. Access and testing methods vary based on the system and site conditions.

4. Document the Findings

We note the issues we found and explain which items are in good working order, which should be monitored, and which need repair or further evaluation.

5. Provide a Corrective Plan

When repairs are needed, we explain the recommended work, any equipment requirements, and the next steps. Once you approve the repairs, we test the affected equipment and return it to service as appropriate.

We just went solar with ISP (Ion Solar Pros). We began talking in February. We always wanted to get solar panels on our home but it never seemed to work out after previous discussions with various providers over the last two decades. Every discussion over the years with various companies ended up with it being “too” something. Too expensive, too many trees, roof too old, electric bill too low, etc. It was not a failure on the providers part but there were always obstacles. Working with Eli at ISP opened up options which proved positive. We signed a contract and everything moved forward without a hitch. ISP representatives kept me informed through all the steps. Appointments were made and appointments were kept. Layouts were presented and installation was on time and fast! Components were state of the art and the highest quality. No headaches at all and the system should be going live next week! I would recommend Ion Solar Pros without hesitation.
